Scandal ahead of the Nations League: Irish government criticized over matches against Israel

Former Republic of Ireland midfielder Ray Houghton has launched a scathing attack on the country's leadership ahead of the Nations League fixtures.

Details: According to British outlet The Mirror, former Ireland international Ray Houghton accused the Irish government of failing to provide adequate support to the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) and the players. In the veteran's view, the squad has been placed in an impossible position ahead of the upcoming Nations League matches against Israel, amid mounting public outcry and political tensions.

The controversy surrounding the fixtures intensified after a high-profile statement from Ireland head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson during the squad announcement. Asked how the team could be shielded from political pressure, the manager said:

“We are not playing with genocide, we are playing against genocide. We are playing against Israel, not with Israel.”

The coach's comments sparked outrage from the Israel Football Association, after which Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin described the Israeli side's attacks on Hallgrímsson as unacceptable and offered the coach his full support.

Ireland will face Israel twice in the Nations League — on September 27 and October 4. Houghton believes the government has shifted responsibility onto the athletes, forcing them to take the field at the epicenter of an acute international crisis without a clear position from official Dublin.
