Details: Today’s World Cup qualifying playoff between the Czech Republic and Ireland was filled with goals and wild drama, but it was also marred by a truly horrific and distressing incident.
In the 115th minute of extra time, with the score tied at 2-2, Ireland's attacking midfielder Sammie Szmodics came off worse in a challenge with a Czech player, suffering a serious injury that required over five minutes of medical attention right on the pitch.
Szmodics was unable to leave the field on his own, and the medical team had to carry him off on a stretcher.
Garvey Veil came on to replace Szmodics.
