On Wednesday, June 26, the final two matches of Group E of the European Championship took place. Belgium played against Ukraine, while Romania faced Slovakia.
Ukraine - Belgium - 0:0
It was a rather calm match with both teams executing their strategies diligently. Belgium dominated possession and sought opportunities through positional attacks. However, Ukraine's defense was brilliant throughout the game, denying Belgians any close chances at goal. Even when opportunities arose, goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin came to Ukraine's rescue. Ukrainians, on the other hand, sought their luck in counterattacks but were unable to score.
The match ended in a goalless draw, with each team gaining one point.
Slovakia - Romania - 1:1
A highly active match from both teams. Slovakia started stronger and opened the scoring in the 24th minute. Kucka delivered a superb cross, catching Romania's defense off guard as Ondrej Duda headed the ball into the opponent's net - 1:0. However, before the end of the first half, Romania found their chance and equalized. A Slovakian defender fouled a Romanian player, and after VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty that Razvan Marin successfully converted.
The second half was more subdued, with both teams unwilling to take risks, playing out the remainder of the match calmly. This game also ended in a draw - 1:1.
As a result, all four teams in Group E secured four points each. Romania's national team remarkably topped the group due to a higher number of goals scored. Belgium finished second, and Slovakia, also advancing to the playoffs, took third place. Ukraine's national team exits the tournament.
