The opening stages were lively, and midway through the first half, a highly controversial moment unfolded in the Magpies' penalty area. Fabian Schär clattered into Phil Foden with a rough challenge, yet the referee merely waved play on, and after a VAR review, stuck with his original decision.
To be fair, it should be noted that the Manchester City player managed to get his shot away just before the challenge, a detail that likely played a crucial role in referee Samuel Barrott’s interpretation of the incident.
It's worth adding that City desperately need a win to stay in the title race. At the moment, Guardiola's side sit second in the table, four points adrift of Arsenal.
