Details: Cristiano Ronaldo's sister posted an explosive message on Instagram amid the latest controversy surrounding the legendary forward and the Portugal national team. Her reaction came after several turbulent days in which Ronaldo spent the entire 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway on the bench before subsequently leaving the national-team camp.
Elma did not hold back, defending Cristiano while directing harsh criticism at the national-team structure, Portuguese journalism and even the Portuguese public:
“CR7 deserved MORE RESPECT. The national team deserved more structure. Portuguese journalism deserved more competence and less speculation. As for the Portuguese people... they don’t deserve to have the best at anything. We are envious, disrespectful and ignorant, and we deserve to return to the mediocrity we always had in football before CR7. Thank you for everything, CR7. You deserved MORE!”
The message immediately added another layer to the uncertainty surrounding Ronaldo's future with Portugal. The 41-year-old had been an unused substitute against Norway, an extremely unusual situation during his long international career, and later confirmed that he had decided to leave the Portugal camp following Jorge Jesus' press conference and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.
It is worth noting that, according to UEFA figures updated on September 29, Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, holding the men's international records for both goals and caps.
