Cristiano Ronaldo's legendary chapter with Portugal appears to have reached its final page.
Details: According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, Cristiano Ronaldo has made the final and irreversible decision not to return to the Portugal national team. The report states that the legendary forward has brought his international career to an end after more than two decades representing his country.
O Jogo adds that Portugal's 1-0 Nations League victory over Wales at the Estádio José Alvalade on September 24 was Ronaldo's final appearance for the national team. He was subsequently an unused substitute in the 2-1 win over Norway.
The development follows several turbulent days around Ronaldo and head coach Jorge Jesus. On September 30, the forward confirmed that he had decided to leave Portugal's training camp after Jesus' press conference and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença. Ronaldo said he would explain the reasons behind his departure to the Portuguese public in due course.
Ronaldo's own statement did not formally announce his international retirement, but O Jogo subsequently reported that the decision not to play for Portugal again has already been made and is irreversible.
It is worth noting that Ronaldo made his senior Portugal debut in 2003. According to UEFA's figures updated on September 29, 2026, he is the all-time record holder in men's international football with 146 goals in 234 appearances.
