Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has extended his best wishes to Eric Chelle following his appointment as Nigeria’s head coach. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) named Chelle as the team’s new boss earlier this year, replacing interim manager Augustine Eguavoen.

Rohr’s Message of Support

Rohr, Nigeria’s longest-serving coach, acknowledged Chelle’s appointment and encouraged him to make the most of his opportunity. “Nigeria has a new coach, Eric Chelle. I wish him all the best. He will give you the chance to get the best players of the country,” Rohr told journalist Shina Oludare.

Rohr took over Benin after being fired from Nigeria, and he has performed admirably there, even defeating the Super Eagles.

High Expectations and Immediate Pressure

Chelle’s appointment has been met with skepticism due to his limited coaching experience. His first major challenge will be Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March. The Super Eagles are currently in a precarious position, sitting second from bottom in their group with just three points from four matches.

Failure to win both upcoming games could put Chelle’s job in jeopardy, as Nigerian fans demand World Cup qualification after missing out on the last tournament.
