Details: During the La Liga clash between Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid, defender Dean Huijsen received a red card for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity, while the referee also awarded a penalty against the visitors. The decision immediately raised a question: can a player be sent off and concede a penalty for the same incident?
According to IFAB's Laws of the Game, a defender who denies an obvious goalscoring opportunity inside their own penalty area is generally shown a yellow card if the offence involved an attempt to play the ball or a challenge for the ball and a penalty is awarded.
However, the rules provide for a different punishment when the offence involves holding, pulling, pushing or a situation in which the defender had no possibility of playing the ball. In these circumstances, the referee must award a penalty and show a red card if an obvious goalscoring opportunity was denied.
It is worth noting that Huijsen was named in Real Madrid's starting lineup for the derby, which takes place at the Metropolitano as part of the seventh round of La Liga.
