Punishment from Carrick! Manchester United captain left on the bench
Michael Carrick has made one of the boldest decisions of his Manchester United tenure.
Details: According to talkSPORT, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been dropped from the starting lineup for the Premier League clash with Bournemouth. The Portuguese midfielder is fit, trained on Friday and Saturday and remains available for selection, but Carrick has decided to leave him on the bench at Old Trafford.
The decision comes after a difficult period for both Fernandes and Manchester United. The Red Devils were thrashed 4-1 by Como in the Champions League in midweek, extending their winless run in all competitions to seven matches.
After that defeat, Fernandes publicly questioned the team's tactical approach, stressing that the decision not to press man-to-man had come from the coaching staff. Carrick was subsequently asked whether the midfielder could lose his place or even the captain's armband, but replied that he would always do what was best for the football club.
It is worth noting that this is the first Premier League match of the 2026/27 season in which Fernandes has not started. Before the Bournemouth fixture, he had started all seven league games, recording three goals and one assist.
