Details: Andrea Pirlo has issued an official statement amid the scandal brewing over his possible appointment as head coach of the Italian national team. The criticism stems from his collaboration with the Russian betting company Fonbet, for which he serves as a global ambassador.
Pirlo admitted he watched the debate surrounding his name with great bitterness. According to the Italian, he had previously chosen to remain silent out of respect for the Federation and all those involved in selecting the new national team coach.
The coach emphasized that the controversial partnership began during his stint in the United Arab Emirates and is strictly commercial and sporting in nature.
"To attribute a political meaning to this partnership is to assign me beliefs I have never expressed and do not hold," Pirlo said.
The Italian also thanked Paolo Maldini and Leonardo for their trust and support. They were the ones advocating for Pirlo's candidacy as the new head coach of the national team after Pep Guardiola declined the Federation's offer.
"I regret that a purely sporting decision has so quickly turned into a public confrontation, where motives foreign to me are being attributed. My love for Italy does not depend on any position. It is part of my history and my identity," the coach added.
At this stage, Pirlo's appointment has not been officially confirmed. The Italian Football Federation continues to assess the situation, and the coach's commercial ties with the Russian company have sparked strong resistance among politicians.
It's worth noting that Pirlo won the World Cup with Italy in 2006 and, during his time with Juventus, secured both the Coppa Italia and the Italian Super Cup.
