Star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will miss Gabon’s opening match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations due to injury, a major setback for the team ahead of the continental tournament.

The Gabonese Football Federation (Fegafoot) confirmed on Monday that Aubameyang will be unavailable for the opener against Cameroon, with the announcement coming just six days before the competition kicks off, running from December 21 to January 18 in Morocco.

The Marseille forward is currently receiving treatment from his club’s medical staff after experiencing pain during yesterday’s match against Monaco. His availability for Gabon’s second group match against Mozambique will depend on the progress of his recovery and ongoing medical evaluations.

"The medical staff of Olympique de Marseille wanted to arrange for the medical treatment in Marseille after consulting with the national team's medical staff. The player is unavailable for the match on December 24 against Cameroon. Depending on the clinical and imaging progress, participation in the match on December 28 against Mozambique is possible."
