NPFL Fines Katsina United ₦9 Million and Banishes Club to Jos After Violent Attack on Barau FC
Katsina United have been fined ₦9 million and ordered to play their home matches in Jos after crowd trouble disrupted their Matchday 12 fixture against Barau FC in Katsina. The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) announced the sanctions after finding the club guilty of breaching several sections of its Framework and Rules.
In a statement released on its official platform, the NPFL disclosed that Katsina United failed to provide adequate and effective security during the match, allowing unauthorized persons access to restricted areas. The league further noted that supporters of the home team harassed Barau FC players and match officials, threw dangerous objects onto the pitch, and caused injuries. The league described the behavior as conduct capable of bringing the game into disrepute.
As part of the punishment, Katsina United will play all remaining home matches at the New Jos Stadium in Plateau State behind closed doors.
The club was handed a total fine of ₦9 million, broken down as follows:
- ₦3 million (₦1 million each) for throwing objects onto the pitch, failing to control supporters, and bringing the game into disrepute.
- ₦2 million for failure to provide adequate and effective security.
- ₦4 million (₦2 million each) as compensation for the treatment of injured Barau FC players, damages to the away team’s buses, and for detaining match officials and the visiting team after the match.
The NPFL confirmed that Katsina United have 48 hours from the date of the notice to appeal the decision.
