The cup night in Dortmund did not begin according to plan.

Details: The DFB-Pokal second-round clash between Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen was scheduled to kick off at 20:45 CET at Signal Iduna Park. However, the start of the match was delayed by approximately eight minutes, meaning the opening whistle came at around 20:53 CET.

Despite the unexpected delay, the teams eventually took to the pitch and the German Cup encounter is now in progress. Borussia Dortmund are hosting Werder in a knockout match where there is no room for a draw: if the teams cannot be separated after 90 minutes, extra time and, if necessary, penalties will determine who advances.

The opponents know each other extremely well. They already met at Signal Iduna Park in the Bundesliga on October 9, when Dortmund surrendered a two-goal advantage late in the game and Werder rescued a dramatic 2-2 draw.

It is worth noting that Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen had faced each other eight times in the DFB-Pokal before tonight, with the record perfectly balanced at four victories apiece. Their previous cup meeting came in February 2020, when Werder won 3-2.

Reminder: A hefty price tag for a midfield leader. Manchester United target Borussia Dortmund midfielder
