They won all their matches: a 2–1 victory over Tanzania, followed by a thrilling 3–2 win against Tunisia, and a confident 3–1 triumph over Uganda. In the knockout rounds, the Super Eagles continued their impressive run, thrashing Mozambique 4–0 in the round of 16 before defeating Algeria 2–0 in the quarter-finals.
Morocco also advanced to the knockout stage as group winners, although they finished with seven points. The Atlas Lions beat the Comoros Islands 2–0, routed Zambia 3–0, and played out a 1–1 draw with Mali. In the round of 16, Morocco edged Tanzania 1–0, and in the next round they overcame Cameroon with a solid 2–0 victory.
