Newcastle Legend Alan Shearer Emerges as Fan Favorite for Match of the Day Host
Newcastle United icon Alan Shearer has been named the top choice among fans to become the next host of Match of the Day following Gary Lineker's departure, according to an Ipsos survey conducted among fans aged 18-75.
Shearer received support from 22% of respondents, narrowly beating Mark Chapman, who garnered 20%. Alex Scott came in third with 12% of the vote.
A long-time pundit on the BBC, Shearer has been part of the network for nearly 20 years. After Lineker’s departure, Shearer signed a new contract with the channel, ensuring his continued presence. Whether this includes stepping into the hosting role for Match of the Day remains to be seen.
Other contenders reportedly under consideration include Mark Chapman, Kelly Somers, Alex Scott, and Gabby Logan.
Earlier reports revealed that this season would be Lineker's last as host of MOTD. Having helmed the iconic program since 1999, Lineker has become a beloved figure on the show. However, the network's decision not to renew his contract reflects a desire to refresh the format after his 25-year tenure.
