Guinean international Naby Keita has officially joined Hungarian club Ferencvárosi on a one-year loan from Werder Bremen with a buyout option. The future of Tunisian midfielder Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane, who has long been associated with Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly, is once again up for debate as a result of this deal.
Ben Romdhane, 25, left Esperance of Tunisia to join Ferencvaros in the summer of 2023. The deal fell through despite Ahly’s intense pursuit of the player during the previous transfer window. But Keita’s arrival could open the door for the Egyptian side to make another attempt to land the talented midfielder.
Ferencvárosi’s official statement highlighted Keita’s loan agreement, which includes a potential permanent transfer. With Keita strengthening the Hungarian club’s midfield, questions arise about Ben Romdhane’s role and whether this opens the door for a transfer to Al Ahly.
Challenges remain for Al Ahly, including Ben Romdhane’s contract, which runs until 2026, and reports of Espérance’s interest in bringing their former player back for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 in the United States.
According to Transfermarkt, Ben Romdhane has made 19 appearances this season, scoring twice but without dishing up an assist. The upcoming months will be critical in deciding if the Tunisian star's next transfer takes him to Cairo, since Ferencvárosi is restructuring their team.
