José Mourinho's Real Madrid have suffered another painful setback in the La Liga title race.

Details: Real Madrid suffered a 2-1 defeat away to Atlético Madrid in the seventh round of the Spanish championship. The highly anticipated Madrid derby took place at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, where Diego Simeone's side secured all three points against their city rivals. The result leaves Mourinho's team six points behind league leaders Barcelona, who have collected 21 points from their opening seven matches.

Real Madrid entered the derby with 15 points from six matches, having recorded five victories and one defeat. However, the visitors failed to add to their tally against Atlético and suffered their second league loss of the season. Mourinho's men now remain on 15 points, while their city rivals have moved up to 16.

Meanwhile, Barcelona continue their perfect start to the championship. On September 19, Hansi Flick's side defeated Sevilla 3-1 away from home, with Raphinha scoring a hat-trick. The Catalans have now won all seven of their opening La Liga fixtures, leaving Real Madrid with considerable ground to make up after the derby defeat.

It is worth noting that Atlético Madrid came into this encounter following two consecutive league victories, having beaten Real Sociedad 3-0 and Osasuna 4-0. Real Madrid's previous defeat in the competition came on September 4, when they lost 1-0 away to Real Betis.
