The son of legendary Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher, Mick, spoke about how his father’s injury impacted his life and how he continues to follow his father’s advice in his own career.

Details. In his book Inside Mercedes F1, Matt Wyman includes an interview with Mick Schumacher, in which the driver talks about his childhood.

"I was a crazy kid — whatever my father did, I did too. My father was always very open to me trying everything I wanted, and racing was the thing I was most passionate about.

He was very supportive and fun, but he could also be demanding. Every time he felt that I wasn’t taking it seriously, he would say, 'Mick, would you rather play football with your friends? If you do, we don’t need all of this.' I insisted that I wanted to race, and he said, 'Alright, then let’s do it properly.' That’s when we started taking part in bigger European karting competitions, and I got better."

"I started racing in formula classes the year after (the accident), and from that moment on, I had to find my own way," Mick Schumacher said. "But I definitely learned a lot from him, especially technically, and I still apply that knowledge, along with his coaching advice. And I’ve always been very resilient," Mick recalls.

Reminder. Michael Schumacher suffered a severe traumatic brain injury while skiing in the French Alps over ten years ago and has not appeared in public since then.
