The police have started an investigation into threats made against referee Michael Oliver following the red card given to Arsenal's Miles Lewis-Skelly.

Details: During the match between Arsenal and Wolverhampton, Oliver sent off the Arsenal player, sparking outrage among the players of the affected team and their fans. After the match, Oliver and his family were subjected to threats and abuse on social media.

PGMOL, the refereeing body, expressed shock and condemned the attacks, calling them unacceptable. They confirmed that they had reported the matter to the police, who have already begun an investigation. "We support Michael and his family and will seek justice for those responsible," said PGMOL in a statement.

Meanwhile, former referee Keith Hackett believes Oliver made a mistake, stating that the offense did not warrant such a severe punishment. He suggested that Oliver should be given time to reflect on his decision by being temporarily removed from officiating several matches.

Alan Shearer also questioned the correctness of Oliver's decision, stating that VAR should not have upheld the red card as the replay clearly showed no serious foul.

Lewis-Skelly risks missing key matches for Arsenal, including the League Cup semifinal against Newcastle. The club plans to appeal the decision before the deadline.
