Last night, Argentina became the first semifinalist of Copa América 2024.

In the quarterfinal match, Lionel Scaloni's team managed to overcome Ecuador, but only after a penalty shootout.

In the 35th minute, Argentina took the lead. Following a corner kick, Manchester United's central defender Lisandro Martinez headed the ball in at the far post. Goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez saved the attempt, but the ball had already crossed the goal line.

In the 62nd minute, Ecuador had a perfect opportunity to equalize, but Enner Valencia's penalty hit the post.

Everything seemed set for the World Champions' victory until the second minute of added time, when Kevin Rodriguez's header from a left-flank cross sent the game into a penalty shootout. According to the rules, due to the heat, no extra time is played in case of a draw, except in the final.

The penalty shootout started with a shock for Argentina as the legendary Lionel Messi's first shot was saved, hitting the crossbar after a touch from the goalkeeper. However, Emiliano Martinez then saved two penalties, and Argentina's subsequent attempts were flawless.

In the semifinals, Argentina will face the winner of the match between Venezuela and Canada.
