On Friday, The Mauritanian Football Federation said they fired coach Amir Abdo, who is from Comoros and France. This happened because the team didn't make it to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Mauritania came in third in their group with 7 points, just one point less than Botswana, which got the second place and a spot in the tournament, along with group winners Egypt.

In light of this development, the federation appointed Aritz López Garai as the new head coach of the local national team, preparing them for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers.
