Al-Ahli’s captain, Ivan Toney, publicly criticized the officiating crew after the 1-1 draw against Al-Fayha.
“It’s just unbelievable how such things can be overlooked in decisive moments or simply ignored... There was clearly interference here.
Moreover, the fact that the referee told us to focus on another competition while VAR was in progress is completely beyond my understanding. Maybe I’m the bad guy for speaking the truth and pointing out questionable decisions or terrible refereeing,” he continued.
These remarks sparked a massive reaction in Saudi Arabia, prompting Ivan’s club, Al-Ahli, to get involved.
Al-Ahli posted an official statement on their X (formerly Twitter) page, also expressing dissatisfaction with the referee’s actions and standing by their player:
“These errors raise legitimate concerns about the referee selection process and the criteria being applied, especially given the high technical and competitive level of the Saudi Pro League. The team has suffered from unfair refereeing decisions, creating an unacceptable situation that hinders the growth of the competition and disrespects the principle of fair play, which should be the foundation of any successful tournament. Al-Ahli demands access to the recordings and correspondence between the referees and VAR (video assistant referee), as well as their interactions with the team’s players during the match. The club also demands clear explanations for all incorrect refereeing decisions,” the statement reads.
At present, Al-Ahli sits third in the Saudi Pro League with 66 points after 28 rounds, trailing league leaders Al-Nassr by four points.
