Cape Verde national team captain Ryan Mendes has become the subject of a New Zealand police investigation following a report of rape that allegedly took place in March 2026.
According to geglobo, the case has been under investigation since April, with law enforcement authorities examining evidence, including witness statements and medical documents provided by the complainant.
It is reported that the woman, who worked as a translator during Cape Verde's delegation stay, officially filed a complaint with the police. She also contacted several football organizations, including FIFA and the Cape Verde Football Federation, requesting an investigation and possible disciplinary action.

The New Zealand police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, but have not disclosed details due to the confidentiality of the process. FIFA and football authorities have so far refrained from making public comments.
Ryan Mendes himself, the 36-year-old forward who plays for Turkish club Igdir, continues to participate in the World Cup as part of the Cape Verde national team. The squad has advanced to the tournament playoffs, where they will soon face Argentina.
