Two days ago, it became known that the champions of the 2015/16 English season, Leicester City, are facing punitive measures in the form of point deductions for breaches of financial fair play rules over the past three seasons.

The Foxes did not wait for a decision and promptly filed lawsuits against the Premier League and the English Football League.

In the club's statement, Leicester City stated:

"Leicester City Football Club will seek to ensure that each of these investigations is considered by an appropriate and entirely independent legal commission.

The club is committed to ensuring that any allegations against it are properly and proportionately identified in accordance with the applicable rules by the relevant authorities and at the appropriate time.

While Leicester City Football Club would prefer the proceedings to be public so that its supporters and the wider world can be informed of important football governance issues to be considered, the applicable rules require these proceedings to be conducted confidentially, and therefore Leicester City Football Club will not have the opportunity to comment on them at this stage."

After their promotion to the Premier League and their spectacular title victory, the Foxes spent seven more seasons in the top flight before being relegated last summer. Currently, Leicester City sits in the second spot in the Championship, level on points with league leaders Leeds United but with one game in hand.

For guaranteed promotion to the Premier League, Championship clubs need to finish in the top two, while four more teams will compete in the playoffs. Therefore, point deductions could deprive Leicester City of the opportunity to return to the top division of English football at the end of this season.
