Former footballer Joey Barton, who played for clubs like Manchester City and Newcastle, has once again landed in trouble due to his outspoken nature. This time, he appeared in court accused of sending offensive messages to TV pundits Eni Aluko and Lucy Ward, reports The Sun.

According to the prosecution, Barton’s messages were obscene or grossly offensive and intended to cause distress and anxiety. Barton attended the hearing via video link at Chester Magistrates’ Court.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released on bail. Barton is now scheduled to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on February 13 for the next hearing.

The alleged offenses date back to January 3 through March 20 of last year, during which Barton posted tweets targeting Aluko and Ward. The tweets prompted the pundits to take legal action against him.

Barton, however, dismissed the accusations as "nonsense" and has vowed to fight the case and prove his innocence.
