"I'm sorry." Spalletti confirms departure from Italy national team
Luciano Spalletti has officially confirmed that he is stepping down as head coach of the Italy national team, announcing his decision at a press conference ahead of the match against Moldova.
The coach stated that he will remain with the squad until the upcoming match is over, after which he will terminate his contract. According to Spalletti, the FIGC management had informed him in advance about his impending dismissal. He admitted that he had not intended to leave and wanted to continue working, especially during such a challenging period.
We spoke last night, and I was told I would be relieved of my duties as head coach of the national team. I was sorry, considering our relationship—I wasn't going to give up.
He also noted his deep disappointment at not being able to bring his ideas to life on the pitch. However, when asked about betrayal and the current state of the squad, Spalletti, visibly exhausted and frustrated, stood up and left the room before the press conference concluded.
