Marseille, having parted ways with Gennaro Gattuso today, has swiftly identified a successor to the Italian tactician.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the helm of Marseille will now be assumed by the 70-year-old French maestro, Jean-Louis Gasset. In the imminent future, he is poised to ink a contract with the club, extending until the culmination of the ongoing season.

Remarkably, Gasset himself recently found himself unoccupied. He had been at the helm of the Ivory Coast national team at the commencement of the 2023 African Cup of Nations but was relieved of his duties following a defeat to Equatorial Guinea (0:4). Nonetheless, the tournament hosts managed to advance to the playoffs and ultimately clinched the African championship under the guidance of Emersé Faé.

Previously, Gasset has coached in Ligue 1 with Saint-Étienne, Bordeaux, and Montpellier. Additionally, he served as an assistant to Laurent Blanc at PSG and the French national team.

Marseille commenced the current season under the tutelage of Spanish manager Marcelino, but as early as September, Gattuso assumed charge. Under the Italian's guidance, the team secured victories in 9 out of 24 matches, with 8 draws. After 22 rounds, Marseille currently occupies the ninth position in Ligue 1.

On Thursday, Marseille will contest the return leg against Shakhtar in the Europa League Round of 16. The initial encounter concluded with a 2-2 scoreline.
