One of the most recognizable faces of British football has found himself at the center of a major scandal.

Details: According to The Athletic, Jamie Carragher is facing a bankruptcy petition filed by HM Revenue and Customs over an unpaid tax bill. The case against the 48-year-old pundit, listed under his full name James Lee Duncan Carragher, was filed at the High Court in London. HMRC describe a bankruptcy petition as a last resort measure to recover unpaid taxes.

Carragher is a true Liverpool icon: he made 737 appearances for the Reds, second only to Ian Callaghan in the club's history, and after retiring in 2013 he built a lucrative media career, becoming one of the leading pundits on Sky Sports. His net worth is estimated at more than £16 million, which makes the situation with the tax authorities all the more surprising.

Representatives of the former defender have not yet commented on the situation. It's worth noting that HMRC insist they only petition for bankruptcy as a last resort, after all other attempts to resolve the debt, including instalment plans, have failed.
