Former Liverpool and England defender Glen Johnson has urged the leadership of the Merseyside club to consider the possibility of appointing Gareth Southgate as Jurgen Klopp's successor at the end of the season.

"If he's available in the summer, then it's worth considering. He's done a fantastic job with England, so there's no reason why he couldn't succeed at a club like Liverpool, as he'd be dealing with players of a similar level. But there would be an issue with the Football Association because you can't just sign him if he becomes available," Johnson explained.

Johnson also commented on recent rumors that Southgate could take over at Manchester United in the summer.

"There have been a few good, successful managers who have come to Manchester United and struggled, so Gareth won't be guaranteed success if he takes that job."

According to media reports, the leading candidate to take over at Liverpool after Klopp is Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso.
