The Nedbank Cup has witnessed a major shock. One of South Africa’s football giants, Mamelodi Sundowns, has crashed out as early as the round of 16.
Facing TS Galaxy, Miguel Cardoso opted to rest his key players and fielded a largely second-string lineup. By the midway point of the first half, the "Brazilians" were already trailing 0-2, and there were no further goals before the final whistle.
Remarkably, it’s been a long time since Sundowns exited the tournament this early. The team is usually a fixture in the late stages and often lifts the trophy. This is their earliest exit since the 2018/2019 season, when they lost to Chippa United in the round of 32.
It’s also worth noting that the reigning Nedbank Cup champions, Kaizer Chiefs, have already relinquished their crown after falling to Stellenbosch at the start of February.
