Meschack Elia’s future at FC Nantes is hanging in the balance, as the Congolese international continues to struggle since arriving on loan from Young Boys Bern in February.
Signed to boost a misfiring attack, the 26-year-old forward has managed just one goal in seven Ligue 1 appearances—a return far below expectations for a player brought in to make an immediate impact.
Nantes Hesitant on €3M Clause
Elia’s loan deal includes a €3 million purchase option, but Nantes management is now hesitant to trigger it. Despite occasional flashes of individual brilliance, his overall adaptation to French football has been slow.
The club’s coaching staff is reportedly split: some believe he deserves more time, others feel it's time to move on this summer.
Swiss Return Still an Option
Elia remains under contract with Young Boys until December 2026, and a return to the Swiss Super League remains a viable fallback, where he’s still seen as a reliable and consistent performer.
For now, the ball is in Elia’s court. With a few games left in the season, the window to prove himself is closing quickly. The player is said to be fully aware that the next few matches could determine whether he stays in France or heads back to Switzerland.
Unless his form improves drastically, Meschack Elia risks becoming a short-lived experiment at Nantes, rather than a long-term solution.
