Equatorial Guinea have qualified for the 2024 African Nations Championship with resounding 3 - 0 win over congo, according to the confederation of african football (CAF). The decision was made after Congo fielded Japhet mankou, an ineligible player, throughout the qualifying matches.
Congo initially advanced from the two legged tie with 2 - 1 aggregate win. mankou, who scored in congo’s 2 - 1 win on december 29 at the Stade Alphonse Masimba Debat, was found ineligible by caf following formal complaint from the equatorial guinea football federation.
The congolese football federation (FECOFOOT) was fined $10,000 by the caf disciplinary board, which also ruled that congo had forfeited both matches.
Equatorial Guinea’s surprise win following the caf ruling highlights the fact that they now join the central african republic and the democratic republic of congo as participants in the central zone at the 2024 African Nations Championship.
This ruling demonstrates how caf strictly enforces player eligibility regulations, ensuring equality in African football competitions.
