EFF Confirms New 21-Team Egyptian Premier League Format for 2025-2026

In a landmark decision, the Egyptian Football Federation (EFF) has officially ratified a new 21-club Premier League format for the 2025-2026 season, following a broad consensus reached at Monday’s extended meeting with Club League officials and team representatives.
Why 21 Teams?
This expansion is the direct consequence of the cancellation of relegation for the 2024-2025 campaign. The league will temporarily feature 21 teams, with a gradual return to the traditional 18-club structure planned over the next three seasons.
Adjusted Calendar: Earlier Start
- New start date: August 8, 2025 (moved up from August 15)
- End date: End of May 2026
This revised calendar ensures that players will feature in 3–4 matchdays before the national team gathers in September to prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Foreign Player Rule Expanded
Another major development is the new foreign player regulation:
- Each club can field 5 foreign players simultaneously.
- A 6th foreign player is allowed, provided they are under the age of 23.
Rivals Zamalek first opposed this idea, which was supported by Al Ahly, but following discussions, a solution was reached.
Technical Committee Concerns
The EFF's technical committee, which was chaired by the renowned coach Hassan Shehata, expressed concerns about the growing number of foreign players despite the general consensus. The worry is that it might reduce chances for up-and-coming Egyptian talent and have an impact on the depth of the national squad before important tournaments.
Key Takeaways:
- 21 teams in 2025-2026 EPL season
- Season runs from August 8 to May 2026
- New foreign player rules: 5 regular + 1 U23
- No relegation this season; structure returns to normal by 2028
- EFF aims to balance domestic growth with national team priorities
With drastic adjustments meant to boost competition while managing international obligations, Egyptian football is about to enter a revolutionary phase.
