Disaster in Paris? Parc des Princes pitch in terrible shape days before Ligue 1 opener
The champions of Europe may have to open their season on a lawn that looks anything but elite.
Details: According to Culture PSG, the pitch at the Parc des Princes is currently in bad condition just days before the start of Ligue 1. Fresh photos of the Paris arena show a scorched, patchy lawn, a worrying sight ahead of the champions' first home game of the season.
Paris Saint-Germain, five-time reigning French champions and back-to-back European winners, are due to host Rennes at the Parc des Princes on Saturday, August 22, in their opening fixture of the new campaign. Summer heat waves in the capital have once again taken their toll on the playing surface: the club faced a similar problem last August, when the scorched pitch became a major talking point during the match against Angers.
To make matters worse, the Auteuil stand will be closed at the start of the season following a sanction by the league, so the champions' home opener promises to be unusual in more ways than one. It's worth noting that PSG previously invested around €600,000 in a complete relaying of the Parc des Princes turf to solve recurring pitch problems.
Reminder: PSG transfer collapses at the last minute as English club targets Parma goalkeeper Suzuki.
