Bafana Bafana's 2-0 victory against Lesotho in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers has South African football fans on edge as FIFA considers whether to deduct them points for fielding an ineligible player. The main subject of the dispute is Teboho Mokoena, who should have been benched after receiving two yellow cards in prior games but chose to play.

Mokoena Controversy Puts South Africa at Risk

Bafana Bafana dominated Lesotho with a convincing performance, but their celebrations were short-lived. Reports emerged that Mokoena should have been suspended for the match, raising serious concerns about South Africa’s qualification hopes.

Lesotho did not submit a protest within the mandatory 24-hour period, which could allow South Africa to avoid punishment. FIFA still has the authority to take unilateral action and apply penalties in order to establish a precedent, though. Both the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and the Lesotho Football Association (LFA) have publicly expressed their concerns to FIFA and called for an inquiry.

Nigeria and Lesotho Eye Qualification Boost

Nigeria, which is having trouble in the qualifying battle, stands to gain a great deal if FIFA docks South Africa three points. The Super Eagles, who are now fourth in Group C, are in dire need of a lifeline to boost their chances of qualifying for the World Cup. If South Africa is sanctioned, Lesotho would be awarded a 3-0 technical victory, moving them to nine points—one behind Bafana Bafana.

With 13 points, South Africa is still in a commanding lead at the top of the group despite the uncertainties. With four games remaining, they would still be in charge of their destiny even if they were docked points. Hugo Broos, the head coach, has declined to comment on the situation, saying it would be settled in the upcoming weeks.

FIFA’s Decision Could Reshape Group C

If FIFA upholds the complaint, South Africa’s lead will shrink, making the race for the top spot even more intense. The group winners will secure an automatic place at the expanded 48-team World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.

While South African fans hope to avoid any penalties, the incident has cast a shadow over their qualification campaign. With crucial matches still ahead.
