Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has voiced his frustration after his team was denied the opportunity to train at the Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny in Abidjan ahead of their vital 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Benin.

Controversy Over Training Restrictions

Despite FIFA regulations allowing teams a 60-minute training session at the match venue the day before a game, South Africa was informed they couldn’t access the pitch due to another fixture between Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia. Broos condemned the decision, questioning the fairness of the ruling.

“I’m really not satisfied with the decision that we can’t have a pre-match training in the stadium where the game takes place. I think this is a FIFA rule, and it is not being followed,” Broos stated.

The Belgian tactician suggested that Benin may have already trained at the venue before Bafana Bafana’s arrival, raising further concerns about an uneven playing field.

The Importance of This Clash

Bafana Bafana currently lead Group C in the African qualifiers and will look to strengthen their position with a victory over Benin. A victory would put them one step closer to earning a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico with just five games left.

Captain Ronwen Williams’ Take

South Africa’s captain, Ronwen Williams, emphasized the importance of the match, recognizing the high stakes. “We know how vital this game is. A win can open up a gap, while a loss can close it. We need to stay on top,” Williams said.

Bafana Bafana will hold their first training session in Côte d’Ivoire later today as they prepare for the crucial showdown on Tuesday evening.
