On Friday, June 7th, one of the most prestigious events in the European athletics calendar, the European Championships, kicked off.

This year, the competition is taking place in Rome from June 7th to 12th. For the capital of Italy, it marks the third time hosting the continent's foremost athletics championship. The last time the city hosted the tournament was exactly 50 years ago, in 1974.

The Olympic Stadium, where athletes from across the Old World are currently vying for medals, has previously hosted events during the 1960 Olympic Games and the 1987 World Athletics Championships.

In the ranking of the largest official international athletics competitions, the European Championships traditionally hold the third position in prestige, behind only the Olympic Games and the World Championships. The history of the European Championships dates back to the early 1930s, beginning with events that were almost detective-like in nature.

The competition features athletes representing national federations that are members of the European Athletics Association. In individual events, each country can field up to 3 athletes who have achieved the required qualification standard within a specified period.

A country can enter one team per relay event.
