The Austrian Football Association has launched an active campaign to change the sporting nationality of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka.
Details: According to The Athletic, the Austrian football authorities are eager to reach an agreement with the player as soon as possible, hoping he can strengthen the national team ahead of the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
The 22-year-old midfielder, who previously played for Chelsea and Aston Villa, boasts extensive experience with England's youth sides. He was a key figure in the U-19 squad that clinched the European Championship in 2022. However, since Chukwuemeka has yet to earn a senior cap for the Three Lions, FIFA regulations still allow him to officially switch national teams.
The player's connection to Austria runs deep: Chukwuemeka was born in the Austrian city of Eisenstadt to Nigerian parents. Although he spent his childhood in England and holds British citizenship, his birthplace gives the Austrian FA full rights to claim him for their national team.
At present, reports indicate that the final decision rests with the player himself.
Notably, this season Chukwuemeka has made 26 appearances for the Dortmund club across all competitions, netting three goals and providing one assist.
Reminder: Strasbourg has signed defender Aaron Anselmino on loan, who previously played for Borussia Dortmund.
