Barcelona have unveiled their new head coach. What do you need to know about Hansi Flick?
From the new season, the head coach of Barcelona will be German specialist Hans-Dieter Flick. He signed a contract until the summer of 2026.
The 59-year-old Hansi Flick began independent work as a coach only in 2019, when he took charge of Bayern after the failed phase of Niko Kovac's work. Under Flick's leadership, Bayern won the Bundesliga and German Cup in his first season and then the UEFA Champions League.
Flick became the first coach in UEFA Champions League/European Cup history under whom a team won 100% of its matches in a single tournament. In the 2019/2020 season, which ended with Bayern winning the Champions League, the club from Munich won 11 matches out of 11; 43:8 goal difference.
In the spring of 2021, the coach announced that he would leave the club, and he soon received an offer to lead the German national team after Euro 2020, which took place in the summer of 2021.
Flick became the first coach who did not lose a single match in his first ten matches at the helm of the German national team.
At the 2022 World Cup, Germany failed to qualify from the group for the second consecutive time.
After the tournament in Qatar, Germany did not play a single official match: the country became the host of Euro 2024, so it was forced to play only sparring matches. Of the six friendly matches under Flick after the 2022 World Cup, the national team won only one.
After a 1-4 defeat to Japan in September 2023, DFB fired the coach for the poor results. Thus, Flick became the first coach in the history of the German national team to be fired from this position.
Since September 2023 Hansi Flick was without a job.
Recall that the past head coach of Barcelona was Xavi. He worked in the Catalan club since 2021.
