The debate over Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper has intensified recently, as the coaching staff has shown increasing trust in Wojciech Szczęsny over academy product Iñaki Peña, despite Szczęsny’s mistakes in recent matches. This situation could lead to significant consequences.
Details: According to Catalunya Radio, Peña is reportedly frustrated with being benched in recent games. He is also displeased with how Hansi Flick justified his decision during the press conference following Barcelona’s 7-1 victory against Valencia.
If the situation does not change, Peña is considering leaving Barcelona this summer. The club may be forced to sell him, as his contract expires in a year and a half.
It’s also noted that this decision was entirely Flick’s, as Barcelona’s goalkeeping coach, Ramon de la Fuente, reportedly sees Peña as the more logical choice.
Following Marc-André ter Stegen’s serious injury, Peña became Barcelona’s primary goalkeeper, featuring in 22 matches. Szczęsny, however, has played in 5 games, all of which ended in victories for the Catalan side.
Reminder: Yesterday, it was reported that Barcelona reached an agreement on a new contract with midfielder Gavi, which includes a €1 billion release clause.
