Details: According to FootMercato, citing La Nacion, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) is preparing a series of lawsuits over a disinformation campaign targeting the national team and its players during the 2026 World Cup. AFA lawyers are already building an evidence base for upcoming legal proceedings.
After the team returned home, the disappointment from losing the final quickly turned into outrage over the hostile atmosphere that surrounded the Argentines throughout the tournament.
The national team players felt they were in a hostile environment, shaped not only by football events. At the heart of numerous controversies were on-field clashes, refereeing decisions, player conduct, criticism of Argentina’s tough playing style, viral internet posts, and conspiracy theories involving FIFA.
The potential lawsuits will address the spread of false accusations, the use of manipulative or unverified images, and publications where the authors provided no evidence.
The AFA believes that the line was crossed during the World Cup, and now the Federation is determined to seek justice in court.
The defendants could include major media platforms, influential Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok accounts, as well as users with smaller audiences if they participated in spreading content deemed defamatory.
Lawyers are already collecting screenshots, posts, videos, and other documents that could serve as evidence in court.
It’s worth noting that in the 2026 World Cup final, Argentina lost to Spain 0-1 in extra time.
