The 2026 FIFA World Cup is drawing to a close, with only a handful of matches remaining, but plans for the next edition are already taking shape—and it could be even bigger.
Details: Speaking to Blue Sport, FIFA President Gianni Infantino revealed that the organisation is considering increasing the number of participating teams from 48 to 64. The proposal is expected to be discussed after the conclusion of this World Cup.
Quote: "When you organise a World Cup, it is important that you organise it for the whole world. It's not just about Europe and South America, but truly about the entire world. Every country should have the opportunity to dream of playing in the World Cup," Infantino said.
The FIFA president also stressed that the overall standard of international football is exceptionally high and continues to improve across the globe, making it important to give smaller nations a chance to compete on the biggest stage.
Quote: "If you don't give smaller countries the opportunity to take part in the World Cup, they will also lose the motivation to keep improving," Infantino added.
Reminder: The semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup are just around the corner, to be followed by the third-place play-off and the final. However, for many referees, the tournament has already come to an end.
