Fans have strongly reacted to Al Ahly's 1-1 draw with Zamalek in the Egyptian Premier League on February 15, criticizing coach Marcel Koller's cautious strategy. Moroccan players Achraf Bencharki and Mahmoud Bentayk scored goals for their respective teams in the intense match at Cairo International Stadium.
Fans Demand More Aggressive Tactics
Al Ahly dominated much of the game, but they were unable to take advantage of their opportunities, which infuriated the fans. Koller was accused by many of giving Zamalek a point by being unduly defensive. Some even demanded that he be fired before the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup because they thought his strategies wouldn't work against more formidable opponents.
Koller Responds to Criticism
In a post-match press conference, Koller defended his approach, stating that league matches are becoming increasingly competitive. He highlighted Al Ahly’s defensive solidity, aside from a single error that led to Zamalek’s goal. He also noted the absence of key player Ali Maâloul due to injury and praised Achraf Bencharki’s growing impact after returning from injury.
After the disappointing draw, Al Ahly will concentrate on their next league game on February 26 against Haras El Hodood. As they pursue a championship, the Red Giants want to recover and get back on track.
