AFCON 2025: Late Daka Header Earns Zambia 1-1 Draw Against Mali in Group Opener
Zambia struck late in the second half to secure a dramatic 1-1 draw against Mali in their opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Monday afternoon. The late goal ensured both sides began their tournament campaign with a share of the points.
Mali took the lead in the 61st minute through Lassine Sinayoko, who finished from close range following sustained pressure. The Auxerre forward delivered a standout performance for Les Aigles, earning the Man of the Match award for his efforts.
Despite Mali’s dominance for large periods of the contest, Zambia refused to give up. Their persistence paid off in stoppage time when captain Patson Daka rose to meet a cross and powered home a superb diving header in the 91st minute, leaving goalkeeper Diarra with no chance on the goal line.
The late equaliser denied Mali a winning start, as both teams settled for a point in their AFCON 2025 opener and now turn their attention to the remaining group fixtures.
