The referee made a tough call!
Details: Today, in the opening match of AFCON Group A between Mali and Zambia, the main referee Omar Artan made a highly controversial decision by awarding a penalty to Mali after an incident in Zambia’s penalty area.
During a Malian attack, Zambia defender Banda went in hard to challenge Mali midfielder Nene. In the tussle, Banda slid in and caught his opponent’s leg, but initially the referee decided not to award a penalty.
However, VAR intervened, and after checking the replay, referee Omar Artan pointed to the spot in favor of Mali—a decision that sparked outrage among the Zambian players.
Nevertheless, Mali failed to capitalize on the opportunity. El-Babile Toure aimed for the left corner, but Zambian goalkeeper Willard Mwanza produced a brilliant save.
At halftime, the score remains 0-0.
