Former Super Eagles defender Abbey George has voiced his concerns over Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as the team continues to struggle in Group C of the qualifiers.

Nigeria’s Qualification Hopes in Jeopardy

The three-time African champions currently sit in fifth place with just three points from four matches, trailing group leaders Rwanda. So far, the Super Eagles have only managed draws against Lesotho, Zimbabwe, and South Africa before suffering a disappointing 2-1 loss to Benin.

Group C Standings After Four Matches

  • Rwanda - 7 points
  • South Africa 7 points
  • Benin 7 points
  • Lesotho 5 points
  • Nigeria 3 points
  • Zimbabwe 2 points

With only the group winner securing automatic qualification and four of the nine second-placed teams advancing to the intercontinental playoffs, Nigeria must put together a strong run to stay in contention.

Abbey George’s Emotional Plea

Abbey, a 2004 AFCON bronze medalist, reflected on Nigeria’s previous World Cup qualification failures and the disappointment of missing out on the global stage.

“I cried in my room when we failed in Kano,” Abbey told Brila Media. “My kids ask me if I ever played at the World Cup, and I say no. It would be a very big shame if these players never get the chance to play at the World Cup. They are at the peak of their powers.”

Super Eagles Face Pivotal Fixtures

Newly appointed head coach Eric Chelle has named a 39-man provisional squad for Nigeria’s upcoming crucial fixtures. The Super Eagles will travel to Kigali to face Rwanda on March 21 before hosting Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on March 25.

With mounting pressure, the team must secure victories in both matches to avoid missing out on back-to-back World Cups—an outcome that would be a major setback for Nigerian football.
