A new candidate for the position of head coach of the USA Basketball team has been announced

The USA men's basketball team has been crowned Olympic champions, defeating France in the final to secure their fifth consecutive gold medal, according Evan Sidery/

However, despite this success, head coach Steve Kerr will step down from his role. Currently, Erik Spoelstra is considered the leading candidate to replace Kerr. Spoelstra previously served as an assistant to both Kerr and former USA head coach Gregg Popovich.

Spoelstra has been with the Miami Heat since 2008. He led the Heat to the NBA Finals in 2011, where they were defeated by the Dallas Mavericks 2-4. Under his guidance, Miami won the NBA Championship in the 2011-2012 season and successfully defended their title in the 2012-2013 season.

In the men's tournament, the United States claimed victory, defeating their opponents 87-98 in the final and winning their fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal. In the women's tournament, the U.S. team also emerged victorious, narrowly beating France 66-67 to secure their eighth consecutive gold.

Notably, this Olympic gold became the sixth in the career of American basketball player Diana Taurasi, making her the most decorated basketball player in Olympic history.
