2027 AFCON Qualifiers: Senegal bounce back with win over Ethiopia

Patrick Vieira’s side secured a win on 29 September at Bahir Dar Stadium as part of matchday 2 of qualifiers for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.

The Lions of Teranga’s trip to Ethiopia ended in victory. Facing the Walia on Tuesday in Bahir Dar, the Senegalese dictated the pace of the game.

The Lions of Teranga took the lead in the first half. Ibrahim Mbaye found the net in the 11th minute following an assist from Nicolas Jackson to make it 1-0.

Senegal and Ethiopia went into the break with the Lions holding that lead. However, the score remained unchanged in the second half. Canaan Markeneh could have equalised for the Walia with a header from close range in the 56th minute, but Yehvann produced a fine save to keep the ball out.

Senegal managed to hold on to their lead until the final whistle. This was the first victory for the Lions of Teranga, who had drawn 1–1 in Maputo against Mozambique on the opening day of the qualifiers.

It was also Patrick Vieira’s first ever win as Senegal’s manager.
