One of the clashes of Serie A’s 37th round will be played on Sunday at the San Siro in Milan, where Inter host already officially relegated Verona. Here’s my take on the outcome: the hosts are playing their final home game of a golden season, while the visitors are simply trying to close out a disastrous campaign with some dignity.

Match preview

Inter approach this fixture having already secured both domestic trophies this season. First, the Nerazzurri clinched the Scudetto with three rounds to spare, then added the Coppa Italia by beating Lazio 2-0 in the final. For Cristian Chivu, it’s a historic debut season at the helm: the Nerazzurri have claimed their first domestic double since the Mourinho era, underlining their status as the dominant force in Italian football.

Even after their celebrations, Inter remain far too powerful for a Verona side in its current state. The team has scored at least twice in each of their last eight matches in all competitions, and have done so in 26 of 36 Serie A games this season. Lautaro Martínez still leads the scoring charts with a comfortable margin, Federico Dimarco is having a standout season for chance creation, and the only notable absentee ahead of this match is Hakan Çalhanoğlu.

Verona are officially relegated and Paolo Sammarco’s side are simply trying not to sink entirely as the season concludes. After years of battling for survival, their resources have finally run dry: just two points and two goals in their last eight matches tell the story. In the previous round, Verona lost 0-1 to Como, although Kyron Bowie came close to scoring—his second-half goal was ruled out after a VAR check.

The main problem for the Gialloblu is their attack, which has been suffocating all season. Verona have failed to score in 19 Serie A matches, and another blank would equal their negative club record from 1989. Top scorer Gift Orban has been dropped from the squad for disciplinary reasons, so Bowie—who has scored the team’s last three goals, all away from home—should again lead the line.

Probable lineups

  • Inter: Sommer, Akanji, Acerbi, Augusto, Henrique, Barella, Sučić, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco, Thuram, Lautaro Martínez.
  • Verona: Montipò, Edmundsson, Nelsson, Valentini, Belgali, Akpa-Akpro, Gagliardini, Bernède, Frese, Suslov, Bowie.

Match facts and head-to-head

  • Inter have won their last eight home matches against Verona at San Siro.
  • Verona have not beaten Inter in their last 29 Serie A meetings, losing 24 of those.
  • Inter have scored at least two goals in each of their last eight matches in all competitions.
  • No more than 3 goals have been scored in the last 8 head-to-head fixtures at Inter’s home ground in Serie A.
  • Verona have taken no more than 3 corners in 6 of the last 8 head-to-head games at Inter in Serie A.

Prediction

Even with possible rotation after the Coppa Italia final, Inter remain firm favorites. Chivu’s side possess too much quality across every line, and with this being their final home game of the season, it’s the perfect stage to celebrate the double in front of their fans and extend their winning streak. Lautaro is still fired up in the race for top scorer, and against a weakened, demoralized Verona, this attack should create chances at will. Verona arrive in Milan already a Serie B team and with a miserable scoring record. The visitors may try to sit deep, but their defense has been under pressure for too long, and up front they lack both consistency and individual spark.
