International, London, Selhurst Park

On November 5, 2026, Crystal Palace will host Hoffenheim on home turf in the fourth round of the Europa League league phase. We are set for an intriguing clash between two teams that have yet to show much consistency in European competition. The English side will be counting on the support of Selhurst Park, while the German club will look to keep its push for a place in the playoff round alive. Both teams desperately need to collect points, as the current standings leave little room for complacency.

Team form and position in the table

Let’s start with Crystal Palace. The London side head into this fixture in far from ideal spirits. Pierre Sage’s team are going through a difficult spell in the English Premier League, having picked up just seven points after nine rounds and sitting 18th in the table. The goalscoring record is particularly concerning, with nine scored and 21 conceded.

Their recent results have been underwhelming as well. The Eagles suffered a 0-5 defeat to Brighton, lost 0-2 to Newcastle, drew 2-2 with Beşiktaş in the Europa League, beat Fulham 1-0 in the EFL Cup, and then suffered another defeat—this time a 0-2 loss to Tottenham.

That said, things look slightly better for them in Europe. After three rounds, the English side have four points and sit 15th in the overall standings. They opened their campaign with a 4-0 thrashing of Lech, then lost 2-3 to Lyon before sharing the spoils with Beşiktaş in a 2-2 draw on the previous matchday. It is clear that the team possess attacking potential, but their defense continues to raise far too many questions.
Hoffenheim cannot claim to be enjoying a perfect season either, although their situation in Germany is somewhat better. After eight Bundesliga rounds, Christian Ilzer’s side have collected nine points and sit 11th. The Germans have won three matches but suffered five defeats.

Their recent fixtures have brought both pleasant surprises and disappointments. Hoffenheim beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-1 and demolished Bayer 3-0, but then lost 0-2 to Werder Bremen. In the German Cup, the team also failed to get past Holstein Kiel, finishing regular time at 1-1 before losing in a penalty shootout.
In the Europa League, after defeats to OFI (0-2) and Beşiktaş (2-3), the Germans finally secured a convincing win by thrashing Lyon 3-0. They currently have three points and sit 23rd in the table. That makes the meeting in London hugely important for both sides.

Head-to-head history

There is not much to report here yet: Crystal Palace and Hoffenheim have never previously met in official international competition. As a result, this game will be the first competitive meeting in the history of the clubs’ rivalry.
There is therefore no past head-to-head record to rely on. Everything will come down to current form, tactical preparation, and which team makes better use of its chances.

Players to watch

For Crystal Palace, Yeremy Pino has emerged as the main attacking figure in the club’s current European campaign. The Spaniard has already scored three goals in three Europa League matches and looks like one of the team’s most dangerous players. His pace, technique, and ability to find space between the lines could pose a serious problem for the German defense.
Eddie Nketiah and Daichi Kamada also deserve attention. The former can operate effectively as the focal point of the attack, while the Japanese midfielder provides creativity and helps move the ball forward. However, the hosts will have to manage without Jean-Philippe Mateta, who is suspended for the match.
For Hoffenheim, Andrej Kramarić is the standout player. The Croatian remains one of the German club’s most experienced and technically gifted performers. He knows how to find pockets of space, combines intelligently with his teammates, and can decide a match-winning moment on his own.

Another intriguing figure is Adam Daghim. The young Danish forward has already found the net in the Europa League and could add the necessary pace to the visitors’ attack.

Fisnik Asllani and Adam Hložek are also worth keeping an eye on, as both can create danger through individual brilliance and well-worked team combinations.

In my view, this is one of those matches where home advantage does not necessarily translate into superiority in terms of quality or current form. Crystal Palace are going through a difficult period, making regular defensive errors and struggling for goals in the league. Mateta’s absence could also affect the London side’s attacking options.

Hoffenheim, however, can hardly be called a model of consistency either. The Germans are capable of thrashing Bayer and Lyon, only to unexpectedly lose to an opponent of lesser quality. That makes the outcome particularly difficult to predict.
I expect the visitors to try to exploit the English side’s defensive problems, while the hosts will look for openings through quick attacks and Pino’s individual skill. I am expecting an open game, with both teams likely to create chances to find the net.

My prediction: both teams to score — yes.
